Franchesca Anchelia graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts. Franchesca is currently the Office Assistant for the School of Communication + Journalism. She is the first point of contact for anyone who walks into the advising office. She is responsible for maintaining the student database and filing system as well as scheduling advising appointments. Franchesca is bilingual in both English and Spanish.
Karen Baer is an accountant at SCJ, and performs basic accounting functions such as ledger/fund analysis, cost analysis, fund reconciliation, posting, and fiscal control of inventory. She also prepares financial reports from standard operating statistics and/or financial data. Investigates and resolves problems related to funds, budgets, expenditures, and/or procurement practices. Provides assistance in the development, implementation and maintenance of internal fiscal systems and procedures, applying basic concepts, methods, and techniques.
Myron Brown is a College Recruiter at the School of Communication + Journalism at Florida International University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Rochester College and a master’s of arts from the University of Phoenix.
Prior to coming to FIU, he was an associate professor of physical education and associated athletic director at the University Virgin Islands located in St. Thomas VI. Myron, also helped recruit student athletes, traditional students, non-traditional students, adult learners and international students for UVI.
Myron loves sports, music, traveling, cooking, and hanging out with his family.
Communication Senior Secretary
Kate Caylor performs highly responsible and confidential, secretarial duties and administrative functions for the Department of Communication.
Brian Friedman sees to the IT service needs in the School of Communication + Journalism.
Julia Hirst handles admissions, graduation, online enrollment and day to day operations for graduate programs in the School of Communication + Journalism. An FIU alum and enthusiast for study-abroad programs, she is multi-cultural and fluent in several languages. After completing her BA in International Relations with a Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, she received a fellowship from the OAS (Organization of American States) for post-graduate work. Julia has a long career in education, the arts, and community health, and has worked at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and for the Institute of the Americas at the University of California, San Diego.
Paige W. Johnson
Paige Johnson is an Academic Advisor within the Department of Communication in The College of Communication, Architecture + the Arts. She been at FIU since October 2011.
Wayde Klipper has over 40 years in the video industry. He ran his own business servicing broadcast video equipment, and designing and building video systems throughout South Florida. He has been working at FIU since April of 2007 and is the Technology Manager/LMS Administrator.
Meira Langsam performs highly responsible and confidential, secretarial duties and administrative functions for the Department of Communication.
Shawnda Mair provides administrative and clerical support for the Department of Communication. Shawnda began her journey at FIU in the Registration office before joining the staff at CARTA.
Francisco Marrero began his advising career at FIU in January 2007. He currently serves as an advisor for the Department of Communication. Prior to academic advising, he was a coordinator at the Registrar’s Office at FIU. Francisco received a B.S. in Economics from Universidad de La Habana.
Community Engagement Coordinator
Gabby Portela serves as the the Community Engagement Coordinator and supports the Department of Communication’s Internship Initiative, oversees the alumni board, and coordinates the logistics of the department’s community projects. She earned her B.A. in Art History from Florida State University and an M.S. in Higher Education Administration from FIU. Gabby joined FIU in 2011 as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the Frost Art Museum where she directed the design of all publicity materials including press releases, invitations, brochures, and museum catalogs. Previously, she worked at several cultural institutions including Miami Art Museum, The Florida Historic Capitol, and 621 Gallery. She is an active member of the Junior League of Miami and is the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Miami Seminole Club.
Jacky Raful began her advising career with the College of Communication, Architecture + the Arts in November of 2014. She currently advises fully online Communication Arts students. Prior to academic advising, she was an Undergraduate Admissions Counselor at Florida International University. Jacky received a B.S. in Communications and Spanish from the University of Miami and an M.S. in Higher Education Administration from Florida International University.
Juliette Saint Louis
Juliette Saint Louis serves as an academic advisor for Communication Arts students. She also serves as one of the advisors for the Haitian Student Organization at Florida International University. Prior to academic advising, she was a graduate assistant for the office of Campus life working for the Student Government Association at Florida International University- Biscayne Bay Campus. Juliette received a B.S. in Business Marketing with a certificate in Customer Relationship Management from Florida International University and a M.S. in Higher Education Administration from Florida International University.
Joshua Shear is responsible for overseeing the running of the SCJ Studio, as well as maintaining information technology strategies by managing staff; researching and implementing technological strategic solutions.
Mercy Simon serves as the office coordinator for the Department of Communication managing the department budget, contracts, and administrative needs. She began her career at FIU in 2007, joining the Speech Communication Department as an office specialist.
Rod Stumhofer Graduated from RETS an Electronic Trade School and also from Jackson Community College with an AA degree in Arts and Sciences. He has spent approximately 55 years in the Broadcast/Journalism arena and is now Equipment Manager of the College of Communication, Architecture and the Arts Equipment Room.
Michael Tarno provides help desk support as an outsourced service. He installs new computers and upgrades or repairs existing equipment. He is proficient in multiple programming languages and assists with web maintenance.
Verónica Van Derdys-Palomo
Verónica Van Derdys-Palomo, graduated from FIU with a Master of Science degree in Mass Communication, with an emphasis on Investigative Journalism. She also has a Bachelors of Arts degree in Public Communication and Journalism from the University of Puerto Rico. Prior to working at SCJ, Verónica spent five years as a Coordinator of Testing for Undergraduate Education at FIU and as a Freshman Experience Instructor. Veronica has across-the-board experience in academics for the undergraduate and graduate community, foreign credential evaluation, educational presentations, advising and event planning. She was awarded the High Achievers Award for Outstanding Service and commitment from the Student Government Council at FIU Biscayne Bay campus.
Allan Wilson holds a BA in Communication from The University of the West Indies, a MS in Mass Communication from Florida International University, and over a decade of experience in education, content management, graphic design, project management, and communication. He started his career in communications as graphic designer and public relations assistant at The Bank of Jamaica. In 2009 he left Jamaica to participate in The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program in Kumamoto, Japan. He spent the next four years in Japan as an English teacher and intercultural communications practitioner. Before joining the FIU family, Allan managed communications for The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Jamaica.
